Starting a journey

Hello everyone. April here. It’s been a while.

This is my last semester of college- in a few short months I will  start a new part of my life.  I’m going to use this blog to share my journey.

I will post my current work including stories, multimedia and photographs and give additional information about the process behind creating them. I will also give my take on journalistic work and share interesting content. I’ll also give anecdotes and opinions on what it’s like to be just starting out as a journalist and young person in this day and age.

I’m excited to start this journey, please come along with me!

What are you doing Winter Break? There are a lot of exciting options

For many of us college students, the thought of the upcoming winter break is keeping us sane during the whirlwind stress of final projects and exams.  Many students plan to have a low-key break spending time with family and friends and celebrating the holidays.

But once you’ve been home for a while, the itch to do something exciting hits many students. But what to do?

In fact, there are a lot of really exciting options.

Volunteering is a great way to stay occupied and make a difference during the break. The Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, Goodwill, and other charitable organizations are popular choices. You can also volunteer at an animal shelter or hospital. Or, you can clean out your closet and donate gently worn items as well as non-perishable food items to local food banks and thrift stores. If you want to go on a trip to volunteer, this list of alternative winter break volunteering trips will get you started.

You can also get a head start on next semester by taking mini-session classes at your university or community college. If you want to take classes and live adventurously, try studying abroad. There are many different programs available. If tropical weather sounds like the perfect fit for you, try University of Southern Mississippi’s Caribbean Studies Program. Here is a list of programs offered from George Mason University.

If you would rather get away from academics, going traveling is always fun if you can afford it. If you are the outdoorsy type, investigate trips your university organizes. University of Southern Mississippi as well as University of Michigan offer group skiing trips. Michigan also offers dogsledding and ice climbing.

Whatever you choose to do during your break, enjoy your time away from college stress.
